Work Program

The Academic Committee for Artificial Intelligence (ACAI) of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) was formed with the idea of initiating and coordinating relevant activities related to the field of artificial intelligence in which the SASA, as a leading national scientific institution, should play an important role in Serbia.

The ACAI work program includes the following groups of activities (the order of listing is not decisive nor does it imply priorities, and the list is not closed):

  • Organizing research conferences
    • initiating and organizing research conferences related to the broad field of AI, at the national and international level, at the SASA
    • active involvement in the organization of similar conferences in the country and in the region
    • providing support for young researchers who would participate in such conferences, as well as ensuring the participation of renowned scientists from abroad in them
    • ensuring that the visibility of such conferences and the recognition of the role of the SASA in them is as high as possible
  • Publishing research volumes in the field of artificial intelligence
    • proceedings of conferences on AI organized by ACAI
    • monographs on AI
    • proceedings of lectures on AI
    • launching the edition of SASA Artificial Intelligence and ensuring adequate dynamics and periodicity of their release
  • Providing support for Open Access publications of SASA members and young researchers. The transition of many publishers to the Open Access model of publishing scientific materials indicates an increasing need for a coordinated approach in this regard.
  • Organizing and coordinating periodic events related to networking activities between researchers in the field of artificial intelligence in Serbia. ACAI should initiate mutual visits of researchers from centers in Serbia where AI is being developed, their joint appearance in applications for national and European research projects and grants, as well as transferring the experiences of renowned researchers to young ones.
  • Initiating small-scale research projects in the field of artificial intelligence, involving doctoral students and other researchers. Such activities are carried out in cooperation between ACAI and relevant universities, faculties and institutes, which would provide doctoral students and their mentors with potential collaborators and, over time, improve their cooperation through joint publications and larger projects.
  • Organizing guest lectures of lecturers and researchers from abroad. As part of networking and cooperation activities with other institutions, ACAI communicates intensively with researchers in the field of AI from other countries and strives to secure their guest lectures at SASA. The positive experiences of SASA in organizing similar guest lectures of experts from other fields serve as guidelines for initiating new activities of this kind in the organization of ACAI.
  • Developing and maintaining a database of researchers in the field of artificial intelligence in Serbia. Through this activity, ACAI will provide a better insight into the scientific and research potentials in Serbia, which are changing very dynamically. Such a database should also include researchers from the diaspora and help better networking and the implementation of other activities coordinated by ACAI.
  • Connecting with foreign centers where artificial intelligence is being developed. SASA already has sufficient experience in such connections. ACAI seeks to use the existing experience of other members and boards of SASA in order to intensify cooperation with relevant foreign institutions in the field of AI.
  • Cooperation with domestic universities and institutes in research activities in the field of artificial intelligence. Such cooperation is encouraged by the great interest of institutes and research centers in Serbia in employing quality research staff. ACAI actively participates in finding suitable candidates among students (especially master’s and doctoral studies) at universities in Serbia and in establishing more intensive communication between them and institutes and research centers. Such a model of connection in practice is very present when it comes to the search for young personnel by companies from industry, so ACAI, through these activities, develops a similar model of cooperation between domestic universities and research institutions.
  • Activities in the field of artistic work. Since AI has also penetrated into various fields of artistic creation, ACAI pays special attention to encouraging and coordinating the activities of individuals and institutions whose activities include artistic work directly or indirectly related to AI.
  • Dissemination. ACAI coordinates the development of its website and takes care of its regular updating and maintenance. These activities include opening various channels on important social networks, through which all important news about the work of ACAI is regularly transmitted. In addition, ACAI periodically organizes media appearances and issues public statements about its work. A special group of dissemination activities, from which the entire SASA benefits, are activities to organize panel discussions, forums, thematic exhibitions, presentations and promotions of books by domestic authors in the field of AI. Last but not least, ACAI would encourage membership in relevant international associations that bring together experts and centers in the field of AI (and there are already positive experiences to this end that can be extended further).
