At the end of each calendar year, the Academic Committee for Artificial Intelligence (ACAI) submits a report to the Executive Board of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) on its work and activities in that year. This page contains shorter versions of these reports, as well as reports by individual ACAI members on some specific activities of the committee.
ACAI Work Report for 2025
The most significant activity of the Academy Committee for Artificial Intelligence (ACAI) in 2025 was the co-organization of the Conference on Artificial Intelligence at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA), held on October 9–10, 2025. The conference was first established in 2023, fulfilling a long-standing desire among many researchers in Serbia to organize an event primarily research-oriented and under the patronage of Serbia’s most prestigious scientific institution, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA).
In 2025, as in previous years, the conference aimed to attract researchers from all branches of AI across Serbia and neighboring countries to present their work and results. Beyond its research-focused nature, the key characteristics of this conference include:
Exclusive focus on Artificial Intelligence (not merely as a separate session within a broader multi-topic conference).
Stimulating discussion on the fundamental aspects of AI.
Special attention to emerging topics in AI.
Linking techniques and results from different subfields of AI.
Bringing together a large number of researchers from Serbia, the region, and abroad, including both experienced experts and young researchers.
In 2025, the Artificial Intelligence conference took on an international character (in contrast to previous editions, which were national). Two invited lectures attracted particular attention:
Prof. Álvaro Rocha from the University of Lisbon, who spoke about incorporating AI into healthcare strategies.
Petar Veličković, a world-renowned scientist of Serbian origin, leading researcher at Google DeepMind, and lecturer at the University of Cambridge, who discussed Large Language Models and Graph Neural Networks.
Following the conference, work began on a special issue of the international journal Computer Science and Information Systems (ComSIS) featuring the best papers from the event. Publication is expected in 2026. The guest editors for this special issue will be Academician Dušan Teodorović, Corresponding Member Mirjana Ivanović, and Professor Ranka Stanković from the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade.
Upon the initiative of the ACAI Chairman, SASA Corresponding Member Vladan Devedžić, the committee was admitted as a full member of CAIRNE (Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe), the largest and most important European AI association. This membership is highly significant for the committee’s work, facilitating a greater flow of information regarding AI.
During 2025, the ACAI launched its official website: https://sasaai.rs. Vladan Devedžić took over the responsibility for its regular maintenance and editing. All important information and news regarding the committee’s activities are published on the site.
In 2025, ACAI established connections with foreign centers and laboratories—specifically from China, Malaysia, and Poland—to exchange information and enrich the committee’s activities while promoting the Artificial Intelligence conference and other initiatives.
The committee also began organizing guest lectures by foreign experts. Jianxun Cui, an Associate Professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), visited an ACAI meeting on March 11, 2025, and delivered a lecture titled “High-Fidelity Traffic Participants Behavior Modeling for Autonomous Driving Simulation Training and Test.” This visit initiated a partnership between ACAI and HIT, resulting in a joint project and several lectures delivered by Vladan Devedžić at HIT and various conferences in China.
The Vice-Chairman of ACAI, Corresponding Member Miodrag Mihaljević, was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor by the Shandong Computer Science Center, Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences). This long-standing collaboration is based on an approved five-year project (2025–2029) focusing on the synergy of information security, blockchain technology, and machine learning. As part of this project, during a visit by a Chinese delegation in July 2025, a document was signed establishing the China-Serbia Center for Advanced Research and Education (CS-CARE) in Belgrade. The center was officially registered with the Serbian Business Registers Agency (APR) in December 2025. In 2026, activities will continue in China, and CS-CARE is expected to begin its operational work, with plans to expand into other research and educational areas.
Finally, in 2025, ACAI began hosting young experts in the field. Professor Aleksandar Jovanović from the University of Kragujevac, Faculty of Engineering, gave a lecture at the ACAI meeting on May 27, 2025, titled “Traffic signal control at displaced left-turn intersections by large language models.”

ACAI Work Report for 2024
The committee began its work in October 2024. During 2024, two more board meetings were held. At the first meeting of the ACAI, the composition of the board and the chairman of the board were verified. The board at that time consisted of Vladan Devedžić, corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (chairman of the board), Miodrag Mihaljević, corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (vice-chairman), as well as four members, academicians Dušan Teodorović, Vladimir Kostić, Aleksandar Kostić and Predrag Peshko. Jasmina Veljić was elected as the technical secretary of the board. Since December 2024, Mirjana Ivanović, a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, has also been a member of the ACAI.
The President of ACAI, Vladan Devedžić, has drawn up the Work Program/Activities of the committee.
Members of the committee also proposed that at the committee meetings, through short lectures, members report to each other on new developments in certain spheres of science and art, and in connection with the use of artificial intelligence. In this regard, at the second and third meeting of the committee, two lectures were held (Vladan Devedžić, Artificial Intelligence: Basic Concepts and Important Topics, as well as Mirjana Ivanović, Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence).
Also, a proposal was made for the possibility of organizing mini-conferences, workshops, lecture series, as well as submitting proposals for a strategic project of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
The most important activity of the ACAI in 2024 was the co-organization of a conference on artificial intelligence at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, on December 26 and 27, 2024. The objective of the conference in 2024 was, as in 2023, to attract researchers from all branches of artificial intelligence from all over Serbia and neighboring countries to present their work and results. In addition to emphasizing its research character, the important features of this conference are:
Belgrade, December 15, 2024. President of the Committee on Artificial Intelligence
Vladan Devedžić, Corresponding Member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts
